Following the recent announcement of a film adaptation of the famous creepypasta Siren Head, it's now The Mandela Catalogue's turn to make the jump to the big screen. But unlike what many might expect, Hollywood's interest in the project went far beyond simple curiosity : no fewer than 11 major American studios reportedly engaged in an intense bidding war to acquire the adaptation rights.
And judging by the names that ultimately secured the project, this could become one of the most anticipated horror adaptations of the coming years.
What Exactly Is The Mandela Catalogue?
Created by Alex Kister in 2021, The Mandela Catalogue is an analog horror web series set in the fictional Mandela County.
It tells the story of a world where strange entities known as "Alternates" have begun infiltrating reality by taking on the appearance of human beings.
These entities can appear through televisions, surveillance cameras, video calls, and can even perfectly imitate the voices of loved ones. Their ultimate goal is even more terrifying : to psychologically manipulate their victims until they disappear, before ultimately taking their place.
It is precisely this concept, which has since become a cult phenomenon online, that has helped The Mandela Catalogue establish itself as one of the most influential works of modern analog horror.
Which Studios Won the Battle?
After an intense bidding war involving eleven major American studios, the adaptation rights were ultimately acquired by Amazon MGM Studios, United Artists, and Amblin Entertainment, the production company founded by Steven Spielberg.
The Original Creator Will Direct the Movie Himself
Like Backrooms, The Mandela Catalogue will be directed by its original creator, Alex Kister, who also co-wrote the screenplay alongside Tyler Clifton. It's a decision that could allow the film to preserve the disturbing and oppressive atmosphere that made the original series such a success.
With Hollywood increasingly turning its attention toward internet horror and creepypastas, fans are already hoping that other iconic properties could soon receive the same treatment, with Cartoon Cat and SCP remaining among the most requested adaptations.
