What if a simple VHS tape could hide a mystery that authorities would rather see vanish forever? That's the starting point of Broadcast Signal Intrusion, a paranoid thriller released in 2021, loosely inspired by the real television signal intrusions that shook the United States in the late 1980s.
The real television signal intrusions
The film follows James, an archivist tasked with digitizing old VHS recordings from a news channel. During his work, he comes across a tape unlike any other. As footage from a news broadcast plays normally, it is suddenly interrupted by a strange masked figure, before the broadcast resumes as if nothing had happened.
Troubled by this discovery, James decides to dig deeper. Searching through the archives, he learns that a second intrusion, even more disturbing, took place during the broadcast of a television series. But when he tries to recover the recording, he finds out the tape has vanished and that anyone attempting to track it down must be reported to the FBI.
Obsessed with the case, he eventually gets his hands on a copy. When he plays it, he realizes that what it contains will pull him into an increasingly unsettling investigation, where the line between reality, obsession, and conspiracy theory grows ever blurrier.
A thriller inspired by a real mystery
Broadcast Signal Intrusion is based on a very real event: the hijacking of several American television channels by a mysterious masked figure whose identity was never officially revealed. The film then imagines what might happen to someone trying to uncover the truth behind these recordings, blending investigation, psychological tension, and a retro atmosphere carried by VHS tapes.
