After the phenomenal success of Backrooms, Hollywood seems to have found its new obsession : adapting the greatest horror legends born on the Internet. And this time, it is Siren Head's turn - the famous creature created by Canadian artist Trevor Henderson - to get its own cinematic adaptation. More interesting still, several elements indicate that Warner Bros. may well attempt to reproduce the strategy that made Backrooms a success.
What is Siren Head?
Created in 2018 by Trevor Henderson, Siren Head is a creepypasta featuring a gigantic humanoid creature approximately 12 meters tall. In place of a head and neck sits a long organic pole on which two functional warning sirens are mounted, capable of emitting human voices, radio messages, or distorted emergency signals.
One of Siren Head's most unsettling features lies in its ability to blend into its environment. Hidden among forests, power lines, or industrial infrastructure, the creature is capable of attacking when its victim least expects it.
A project backed by major horror cinema figures
According to several American media outlets, Warner Bros. recently won an important bidding war to acquire the adaptation rights to Siren Head. The studio entrusted the project's writing to Zach Cregger, director and screenwriter of Barbarian, Weapons, and the upcoming Resident Evil reboot, alongside Brian Duffield.
Brian Duffield is also expected to direct the film. The filmmaker is notably known for No One Will Save You, considered by many fans to be one of the best sci-fi horror films of recent years.
Why this project already recalls Backrooms
The most interesting element, however, concerns the direct involvement of Siren Head's original creator. Just like Kane Parsons on Backrooms, Trevor Henderson will actively participate in the project as an executive producer.
This decision strongly recalls the strategy adopted by A24 with Backrooms, where the creator of the original work was involved in the film's development in order to preserve the identity and aesthetic of the initial universe.
According to several specialized media outlets, it was precisely the vision proposed by Zach Cregger and Brian Duffield that convinced Warner Bros. to win the project's rights against several other major studios.
Is Hollywood looking for its next Backrooms?
The film industry now seems to be watching Internet-born horror phenomena very closely. After the success of Backrooms, several observers believe that major studios are now seeking to identify the next franchise capable of appealing to Generation Z.
With hundreds of millions of cumulative views on social media, dozens of short films, independent games, and a particularly active community for several years, Siren Head already possesses one of the largest fan bases in the genre.
No release date or plot details have yet been revealed. But one thing already seems certain : Warner Bros. does not simply want to adapt a creepypasta. The studio probably hopes to transform Siren Head into the next great Internet-born horror franchise.
