In Colony (군체), we follow Kwon Se-jeong, a brilliant biotechnology professor played by Jun Ji-hyun, trapped in a vast research complex when a scientific conference turns into a nightmare. As authorities seal the building to prevent the virus from spreading, she must try to lead a small group of survivors to safety while facing infected whose transformations become increasingly unpredictable.
The film brings together an impressive cast : Koo Kyo-hwan, Ji Chang-wook, Shin Hyun-been, Kim Shin-rok, and Go Soo. Each character seems to hold fragments of crucial information about the virus's origin, but none possesses the full picture. This narrative tension gradually pushes survivors to question their own certainties, in a claustrophobic setting where trust becomes as dangerous as infection itself.
As the epidemic progresses, the infected no longer simply run or bite. They seem to evolve, gather, and even exchange information among themselves, as if forming some kind of organic colony. This concept - reflected in the original title Gunche, meaning "group" or "collective entity" - is precisely what sets Colony apart from the countless zombie films released in recent years.
This idea draws notably on real biological phenomena, including the behavior of ant colonies or certain species capable of functioning as a single organism. The more infected multiply, the more their collective intelligence seems to strengthen, turning every confrontation into hell.
Directed by Yeon Sang-ho, the filmmaker behind Train to Busan, Peninsula, and the series Hellbound, Colony marks his return to zombies after several science-fiction-oriented projects. Co-written with Choi Gyu-seok, the film premiered in the Midnight section at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival before opening in South Korean theaters on May 21, 2026. In the United States, Well Go USA will release it on August 28, 2026.
While early international press reviews remain mixed, the trailer suggests a visceral, brutal film that deliberately breaks from the genre's usual conventions. For K-zombie fans, Colony could become one of the most striking horror events of the year.
